On Thursday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium, the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals will be kicking off their MLB series.
The Tigers just finished up against the Rays this week. Detroit and Tampa split the first two games, then on Wednesday, the Tigers eked out a 3-2 win.

For Thursday’s game the Tigers will be going with RHP Mike Fiers. In his 23.0 innings and 2-2 record this year, Fiers has a 3.91 ERA with 15 Ks and four BBs.
Heading up the hitting for the Tigers this year coming into Wednesday was Nick Castellanos, with 35 hits, 15 runs and 18 RBI. On Wednesday, Castellanos came up empty.
Over on the Royals’ side, they just completed a set versus Boston. The two teams split those first two games as well, and in the rubber match Wednesday KC lost 5-4.
Kansas City will be rolling with Eric Skoglund on Thursday. Over his 21.2 innings and 1-2 record this year, Skoglund has a 6.23 ERA with 19 Ks and six walks.
Coming into the Boston finale, the Royals’ leading hitter was Mike Moustakas with 35 hits, 18 runs and 19 RBI. On Wednesday, Moustakas went 1-for-4.
The Tigers are 15-36 in their last 51 versus the AL Central and 8-22 in their last 30 during game one of a series. The under is 4-1 in Detroit’s last five during game one of a series and the over is 37-16-1 in their last 54 Thursday games.
Meanwhile, the Royals are 2-5 in Skoglund’s last seven starts on grass and 2-6 in his last eight starts. KC is also 0-4 in the last four Thursday games and the under is 6-1-1 in the last eight Thursday games.
Fiers has a couple of good outings to his credit and a couple of blah ones as well, but he’s coming off a quality start in Baltimore (a loss). As for Skoglund, he started out the year pretty awful but has since calmed down. As such, this should be a pretty good pitching matchup. I’m going to have to go with Detroit here, though.
