The Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets square off in the finale of their three game set from Citi Field on Thursday afternoon in MLB action.
The Atlanta Braves will look to complete the sweep after winning the first two games of the series, including a 7-0 triumph over New York in game two on Wednesday. Johan Camargo led the Braves with a two run home run, while Ender Inciarte and Ryan Flaherty each added solo shots as well with Inciarte adding a double as part of his two RBI outing. Nick Markakis and Freddie Freeman each went 3 for 4 with an RBI, with Markakis adding a double. Starting pitcher Sean Newcomb added a base hit to help his own cause, in addition to tossing a gem on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out eight to improve to 2-1 this season. Julio Teheran will start game three and is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 29 strikeouts this season. In his career, Teheran is 8-5 with a 2.44 ERA and 97 strikeouts against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping the first two games of the set, including the shutout loss on Wednesday. Yoenis Cespedes and Wilmer Flores each added a double, while Amed Rosario added a base hit as well as the Mets mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss. Jacob DeGrom threw four shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out six, not factoring in the decision. Paul Sewald took the loss, falling to 0-2 this season after giving up three runs in three innings of relief. Jason Vargas will start the finale and is 0-1 with a 22.09 ERA and 5 strikeouts this season. In his career, Vargas is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 4 strikeouts against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 6-1 in Teheran’s last 7 starts against a team with a winning record and 5-1 in their last 6 road games while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 road games against a left-handed starter. New York is 2-5 in their last 7 division matchups and 2-5 in their last 7 games against a right-handed starter while the over is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games overall. Atlanta is 11-5 in the last 16 meetings between these two teams in New York.
With Wednesday’s win, the Braves actually overtook the top spot in the NL East, with this point being the latest that the Braves have led the division in a couple of years. New York is sliding, and having Vargas on the mound won’t help. Sure, Vargas will probably bounce back after his horrendous first start, but that doesn’t change the fact that he gave up nine runs in just 3.2 innings against a subpar Padres team. Add in the fact that the Braves have had a lot of success at Citi Field, and I think you have to take a serious look at the plus money here.
