The Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals square off in game two of their four game AL Central division set from Kauffman Stadium on Friday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to find some consistency after splitting their last six games, including a 10-6 loss in the series opener on Thursday. Jeimer Candelario and Nick Castellanos each had two RBIs, with Castellanos hitting a homer while going 3 for 5 and Candelario adding a double. James McCann and Jose Iglesias each added an RBI to round out the scoring for Detroit in the loss, while John Hicks and Dixon Machado each went 2 for 4 with a double. The Kansas City Royals will also be looking to find their own consistency after splitting their last eight games, including the win on Thursday. Lucas Duda led the way, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs, while Salvador Perez went 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Jorge Soler and Alex Gordon each added a solo home run, while Mike Moustakas added an RBI of his own in addition to a double. Jon Jay chipped in an RBI to round out the scoring for KC in the win, while Whit Merrifield and Alcides Escobar each had base hits of their own to finish off the Royals’ offense in the victory. Eric Skoglund gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out six over 4.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Kevin McCarthy picked up the win to improve to 3-0 this season. Ian Kennedy will start game two and is 1-3 with a 3.48 ERA and 28 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kennedy is 3-4 with a 4.01 ERA and 41 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 11-27 in their last 38 road games and 26-57 in their last 83 games overall while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Kansas City is 3-7 in Kennedy’s last 10 starts and 3-13 in their last 16 home games while the under is 5-0 in Kennedy’s last 5 home starts. Detroit is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in Kansas City.
Thursday was a wash for me as I didn’t really trust the pitching matchup so I knew there would probably be fireworks. Kansas City doesn’t really have much going for them, even at home where you’re supposed to do your best work. Detroit isn’t very far off from the Royals, but Liriano has been solid so far this season and has had success against Kansas City and at Kauffman Stadium no less, so I’ll take Detroit to bounce back here with the even money.
