We have some NL Central division action on Saturday from Busch Stadium as the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals square off in game two of their three game MLB set.
The Chicago Cubs will look to rebound and snap a three game losing streak after dropping the opener against the Cardinals by a final score of 3-2 on Friday. Kris Bryant and Ian Happ each recorded a double, while Albert Almora Jr. and Javier Baez each went 2 for 4 at the dish in the loss. Ben Zobrist, Anthony Rizzo and Victor Caratini each contributed base hits as well to round out the offense for the Cubbies in the loss. Jose Quintana took the loss after giving up all three unearned runs on five hits, while walking and striking out four apiece over four innings of work, falling to 3-2 in the process. Tyler Chatwood will start game two and is 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA and 27 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chatwood is 0-3 with a 6.32 ERA and 10 strikeouts against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to stay hot after winning their last three games, including the series opener on Friday. Tommy Pham crushed a three run homer to plate the lone runs for St. Louis in the bottom of the 2nd, but that’s all St. Louis would need for the win. Marcell Ozuna went 3 for 3 while Jose Martinez and Jedd Gyorko each had two hits. Yadier Molina also contributed a base hit as well to finish off the offense for St. Louis in the victory. Miles Mikolas remained unbeaten, improving to 4-0 this season after throwing seven shutout innings, allowing just seven hits while striking out four. Budd Norris had a scare but closed out the 9th for his 7th save of the season. Luke Weaver will start game two and is 2-2 with a 5.17 ERA and 30 strikeouts this season. In his career, Weaver is 0-2 with a 13.09 ERA and 9 strikeouts against the Cubs.
Chicago is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 20-8 in their last 28 division matchups while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games overall. St. Louis is 1-4 in Weaver’s last 5 starts and 12-5 in their last 17 games overall while the over is 4-1-2 in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record. Chicago is 9-2 in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
St. Louis comes into this one in better form over the last few games, but I’m not sure I want to be laying juice with Weaver in his current form. The Cardinals have lost four of his last five starts, and Weaver has allowed 14 runs over 15 innings in his last three starts and has a career ERA over 13 against the Cubs, and allowed six runs against Chicago in four innings just a couple of weeks ago. Chatwood has had struggles of his own against St. Louis, and I’m not sure how comfortable I am backing an anemic Cubs offense that hasn’t put up more than three runs in their last nine games. With that said, whether the Cubs offense wakes up against Weaver again, or the Cardinals get to Chatwood, I’m expecting this one to go over the total on Saturday.
