The Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox meet Tuesday in MLB action at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Pittsburgh Pirates could use a bounce back victory here after losing five of their last seven games. The Pirates have scored 18 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in six of their last 10 games. The Pittsburgh Pirates have won six of their last seven games when scoring more than three runs. Corey Dickerson leads the Pirates with 39 hits and 24 RBI while Starling Marte and Josh Bell have combined for 69 hits and 33 RBI. Ivan Nova gets the ball, and he is 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season. Nova is 4-1 with a 2.42 ERA and 37 strikeouts in his career against the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox also need a victory here after losing seven of their last eight games. The White Sox have allowed 19 runs in their last three games and four or more runs in seven of their last 10 games. The Chicago White Sox have lost 20 of their last 25 games when allowing three or more runs. Offensively, Yolmer Sanchez leads the White Sox with 34 hits and 17 RBI while Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson have combined for 63 hits and 26 RBI. Lucas Giolito gets the ball, and he is 1-4 with a 7.03 ERA and 18 strikeouts this season. This will be Giolito’s first career game against the Pirates.
The Pirates are 5-11 in their last 16 games following an off day, 3-11 in Novas last 14 road starts and 4-9 in Novas last 13 starts. The White Sox are 16-36 in their last 52 games following an off day, 3-13 in their last 16 home games and 1-4 in Giolitos last 5 starts. The Pirates are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings in Chicago, 4-0 in the last 4 meetings and the under is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Chicago.
With both teams struggling, I strongly considered the plus money here, but I just can't back Giolito on the mound. The White Sox pitcher has allowed 25 earned runs in 32 innings, and that includes a home ERA of 16.32 with an allowed batting average of .290 at home this season. Besides his last start against Washington, Nova has been rather solid this season, allowing three or less runs in each of his four previous starts. This is a game the Pittsburgh Pirates should win, and we're getting an OK price on the road.
