For Tuesday’s game, the Mets are rolling with LHP Jason Vargas. In his 8.1 innings and 0-2 record this year, Vargas has a 16.20 ERA with eight Ks and five walks.
Asdrubal Cabrera led the way for the Mets in hitting entering this set with 41 hits, 22 runs and 21 RBI. On Monday, Cabrera went 0-for-5.
Over on the Reds’ side, they’re going with Luis Castillo for the start Tuesday. In 34.2 innings and a 1-4 record this year, Castillo has a 7.01 ERA with 31 Ks and 14 BBs.
Leading the way for the Reds in hitting coming out of the weekend was Jose Peraza with 39 hits, 20 runs and 10 RBI. In the Monday game, Peraza whiffed 0-for-4.
The Mets are 6-15 in their last 21 Tuesday games and 0-4 in their last four during game two of a series. The under is 5-2 in the Mets’ last seven Tuesday games and the over is 4-0 in Vargas’ last four starts overall.
It’s been a rough ride for Vargas so far. In his two starts, he’s allowed 15 earned on 20 hits across 8.1 innings. Castillo has some stinkers on his resume as well, but did give up just two earned on nine hits in 6.0 innings during his last start. This is not exactly a marquis pitching matchup, so it will come down to which guy allows the least amount of damage. I’m tentatively going Mets here, but the play is probably the over.
