The Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays square off in game one of a three game set from Rogers Centre in MLB action on Tuesday night.
The Seattle Mariners will be looking to find some consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last six games, including an 8-2 loss to close out their series with the Angels on Sunday. Ryon Healy accounted for both Mariner runs, going 1 for 3 with a homer while Kyle Seager went 2 for 4 at the dish. Dee Gordon, Mitch Haniger and Ben Gamel each chipped in base hits as well to cap off the offense for Seattle in the loss. Felix Hernandez took the loss, falling to 4-3 this season after allowing five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out five over 5.2 innings of work. James Paxton will start game one and is 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA and 60 strikeouts this season. In his career, Paxton is 2-2 with a 6.86 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Toronto.

The Toronto Blue Jays will look to build some momentum after snapping a three game losing skid with a 2-1 win in their series finale against Tampa Bay, avoiding the sweep against the Rays. Kevin Pillar went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles while scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch. Aledmys Diaz drove in the game’s lone run before leaving due to injury, while Anthony Alford, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Yangervis Solarte and Justin Smoak each added base hits as well in the winning effort. Marco Estrada threw six shutout innings, giving up just four hits and not factoring in the decision. Ryan Tepera blew his third save of the season, but got the win to improve to 2-1 this season while Roberto Osuna notched his 9th save of the year. Marcus Stroman will start game one and is 0-4 with a 7.52 ERA and 30 strikeouts this season. In his career, Stroman is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Seattle.
Seattle is 8-3 in Paxton’s last 11 road starts and 0-5 in their last 5 games against the AL East while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning record. Toronto is 5-1 in Stroman’s last 6 home starts against a team with a winning record and 8-3 in their last 11 series opening matchups while the over is 3-0-1 in their last 4 home games. Seattle is 1-6 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
The Mariners have been inconsistent as of late, but before Sunday’s win, the one thing Toronto had done consistently was lose baseball games. However, you have to think it’s only a matter of time before Stroman finally gets some support and gets a win. And what better place than at home where he is 20-12 in his career, against a Mariners team he has performed well against in a small sample size. Paxton has been a strikeout machine this season, but in a hitter friendly ballpark like Toronto, I’m thinking the Blue Jays can get to Paxton and further inflate his ERA against the Jays, so I’ll take a shot at Toronto and the plus money on Tuesday.
