The Atlanta Braves and the Tampa Bay Rays square off in the second half of their mini two game interleague set from Tropicana Field in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to complete the sweep after taking the series opener by a final score of 1-0 on Tuesday. Ronald Acuna Jr.’s third homer of the season was enough as it was all the scoring the game would see, while Charlie Culberson added a triple and Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman each added base hits of their own as the Braves mustered up just four hits as a team in the win. Sean Newcomb got the win to improve to 3-1 this season after tossing six shutout innings, giving up just two hits while striking out six. Arodys Vizcaino notched his 5th save of the campaign. Julio Teheran will start game two and is 2-1 with a 3.65 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season. This will be Teheran’s first career start against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to bounce back and salvage a split after dropping game one on Tuesday. None of the five Rays base hits went for extra bases, with Carlos Gomez, C.J. Cron, Wilson Ramos, Adeiny Hechavarria and Johnny Field each contributing base hits in the losing effort. Blake Snell took the loss, falling to 4-2 this season after giving up just the one run on four hits while striking out five over 6.1 innings of work. Kyle Yarbrough will start the finale and is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA and 20 strikeouts this season. This will be Yarbrough’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 10-4 in Teheran’s last 14 starts and 6-0 in their last 6 road games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the AL East. Tampa Bay is 6-1 in their last 7 home games and 11-4 in their last 15 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in their last 5 games against a right-handed starter. The under is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams.
The under is worth a serious look given how both pitchers were dealing on Tuesday, and neither offense seemed to have an answer. However, the Braves keep finding ways to win on the road, and have their ace on the mound in Teheran, and have had a lot of success with him on the bump. I’m still not sure what we will get from Yarbrough, so I figure the more proven commodity in Teheran is the safer bet, plus the Braves have been strong on the road lately, so I’ll take the Braves on Wednesday for the sweep.
