Down at Marlins Park on Thursday, the Atlanta Braves will be visiting the Miami Marlins to begin their MLB set.
The Braves just finished a pair against the Rays. Atlanta eked out a 1-0 win in the opener, then on Wednesday won again 5-2.

The Braves will be bringing out Mike Foltynewicz for the start on Thursday. In his 37.0 innings and 2-2 mark this season, Foltynewicz has a 3.65 ERA with 43 Ks and 17 BBs.
Nick Markakis led the Braves coming into Wednesday with 45 hits, 21 runs, six homers and 25 RBI to his name. On Wednesday Markakis had a three-run homer.
Over on the Marlins’ side, they just played the Cubs this week. Miami lost the first two games of that set 14-2 and 4-3, then on Wednesday dropped another one 13-4.
Miami is going with Caleb Smith on Thursday. In his 34.1 innings and 2-3 record this year, Smith has a 3.67 ERA with 48 Ks and 17 BBs.
Tops in hitting for the Marlins heading into the Cubs finale was Starlin Castro with 40 hits, 20 runs and 16 RBI. On Wednesday, Castro went 0-for-4.
The Braves are 4-0 in their last four Thursday games and 3-13 in Foltynewicz’s last 16 starts. Atlanta is also 1-7 in Foltynewicz’s last eight road starts and 0-7 in his last seven starts with five days’ rest.
Meanwhile, the Marlins are 7-20 in their last 27 Thursday games and 5-17 in their last 22 in game one of a series. The Marlins are also 3-7 in their last 10 versus the NL East and 2-6 in their last eight versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
Foltynewicz was cruising along at a nice clip before his last outing, when he gave up six earned on nine hits in 5.0 innings. As for Smith, he’s given up zero earned on five hits over his last two starts in 12.2 innings. This should be a pretty fun pitching matchup if both guys come out firing. I’ve got a tiny bit more faith in Foltynewicz’s ability to bounce back than I do Smith’s ability to keep his run going, but after looking at the win/loss trends I’m going Marlins—should be a good game, though.
