The St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres meet in the opener of a four game set from Petco Park in MLB action on Thursday night.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to rebound after being swept in their mini two game set against the Twins, losing the two games by a final score of 13-1 combined, including a 7-1 loss on Tuesday. Jose Martinez’s solo homer was the lone run on the board for St. Louis, while Francisco Pena added a base knock of his own to round out the offense for the Cards in the loss. Carlos Martinez took the loss, falling to 3-2 this season after giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits over five innings of work. Miles Mikolas will start the opener and is 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA and 31 strikeouts this season. This will be Mikolas’ first career start against San Diego.

San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals - 5/10/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Padres will look to build some steam after avoiding the sweep with a 2-1 win over the Nationals in the series finale on Wednesday. Matt Szczur and Manuel Margot each had a double and an RBI, with Margot going 3 for 4 at the dish to round out the scoring for the Padres in the win. A.J. Ellis went 2 for 4 with a double of his own while Jose Pirela and Freddy Galvis each added base hits of their own to cap off the offense for San Diego in the win. Joey Lucchesi gave up the one run on six hits while striking out six over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Craig Stammen got the win to improve to 1-0, while Brad Hand struck out a pair in the 9th for his 10th save of the year. Jordan Lyles will make the start in game one and is 0-0 with a 3.66 ERA and 16 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lyles is 0-1 with a 4.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts against St. Louis.

St. Louis is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 0-4 in their last 4 road games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL West. San Diego is 1-6 in their last 7 games against the NL Central and 5-15 in their last 20 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 Thursday games. St. Louis is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.

The Cardinals looked awful in their mini set with the Twins, scoring just one run in the two games, however, facing a pitcher in Lyles who isn’t new to starting but has been a reliever all season may help. Mikolas has been a bright spot in the Cardinals rotation and I think he keeps up his hot start with a win in the opener on Thursday.
