We have some AL Central division action on tap as the Kansas City Royals take on the Cleveland Indians in game one of a three game set from Progressive Field in MLB action on Friday.
The Kansas City Royals will look to rebound after losing back-to-back outings to drop their series with the lowly Orioles, including an 11-6 loss in game three on Thursday. Salvador Perez opener the scoring with a grand slam in the 1st, while Jorge Soler accounted for the other two Royals runs, going 2 for 4 at the dish. Whit Merrifield went 2 for 3 with a double and Lucas Duda added a double of his own while Jon Jay chipped in a pair of hits in the loss. Cheslor Cuthbert and Mike Moustakas each contributed base hits as well in the losing effort for KC. Ian Kennedy took the loss, falling to 1-4 this season after allowing nine runs on eight hits while striking out four over four innings of work. Jason Hammel will start the series opener and is 0-4 with a 4.78 ERA and 24 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hammel is 3-5 with a 4.68 ERA and 62 strikeouts against Cleveland.

The Cleveland Indians had a day off to rest after splitting their interleague set with the Milwaukee Brewers, taking game two by a final score of 6-2 on Wednesday. Tyler Naquin went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, while Francisco Lindor added a solo homer. Michael Brantley and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco each added RBIs in the winning effort for the Tribe, while Roberto Perez added a triple while Yonder Alonso added a double while going 2 for 4 at the plate. Jason Kipnis and Jose Ramirez each added base hits to cap off the offense for Cleveland in the victory. Carrasco got the win after throwing a complete game, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out 14 to improve to 5-1 this season. Trevor Bauer will start game one and is 2-3 with a 2.53 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bauer is 2-4 with a 3.08 ERA and 48 strikeouts against Kansas City.
Kansas City is 0-6 in Hammel’s last 6 road starts and 4-17 in their last 21 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Cleveland is 5-1 in Bauer’s last 6 home starts and 44-18 in their last 62 home games while the over is 12-1 in their last 13 home games. Cleveland is 0-4 in Bauer’s last 4 home starts against Kansas City.
The plus money with the Royals is worth a look, considering the Indians’ struggles with Bauer on the mound at home against KC. However, the Royals just dropped their series against Baltimore, and Hammel has been brutal on the road dating back to last season. Bauer ended up with the loss in his start against the Royals this season, but he still gave up just one run in eight innings, and I think if we get the same type of performance here, the Tribe can turn their fortunes around so I’ll back Cleveland here.
