The New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies meet in NL East action on Sunday’s MLB schedule in the finale of their three game set.
The New York Mets will look to pull off the mini sweep of the Phillies after having Saturday’s game two postponed due to rain and being pushed to a single-admission doubleheader in August. The Mets took game one on Friday by a final score of 3-1. Michael Conforto went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a home run, while Devin Mesoraco hit a solo home run to round out the scoring for the Mets in the win. Asdrubal Cabrera went 2 for 3 with a double, while Yoenis Cespedes, Adrian Gonzalez, Wilmer Flores and Jose Reyes each added base hits as well in the win. Steven Matz gave up one run on five hits over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. A.J. Ramos got the win to improve to 2-2 while Jeurys Familia notched his 11th save of the season. Jacob DeGrom will start game three and is 3-0 with a 1.87 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. In his career, DeGrom is 6-1 with a 2.78 ERA and 73 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Phillies will only have the chance to salvage a split after having game two rained out on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 loss, Odubel Herrera went 2 for 3 with a solo homer to account for the lone Philadelphia run in the loss. Scott Kingery went 2 for 4, while Cesar Hernandez, Maikel Franco and Jorge Alfaro each added base hits as well in the losing effort. Jake Arrieta threw 7.1 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits while striking out five and not factoring in the decision. Hector Neris received his third blown save of the year, giving up all three runs in the 9th to fall to 1-3 this season. Zach Eflin will start the series finale and is 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. In his career, Eflin is 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA and 11 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 4-1 in DeGrom’s last 5 road starts and 2-6 in their last 8 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Philadelphia is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall and 2-7 in their last 9 division matchups while the over is 8-3 in their last 11 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 10-1 in DeGrom’s last 11 starts against Philadelphia and 5-0 in his last 5 road starts against Philadelphia.
Okay, call me crazy here. But am I the only one who thinks the wrong team is favoured here? Sure, the Phillies have been in better form over the last couple of weeks, the Mets have been free falling since their hot start to the year and Eflin has looked solid in his first two starts of the year. However, DeGrom hasn’t allowed a run in his last three starts, covering 18.1 innings of work and has had a ton of success against the Phillies in his career. I’ll gladly take a stab at the plus money with New York on Sunday.
