We have some NL West division MLB action on Monday night as the Colorado Rockies take on the San Diego Padres in game one of their mini two game set from Petco Park.
The Colorado Rockies are in dire need of a win after losing four of their last five games, including their series finale against Milwaukee, culminating in a 7-3 loss on Sunday. All of the Rockies’ damage on the scoreboard was done via the long ball, as David Dahl went 2 for 3 with a two run home run, while Tony Wolters added a solo shot to open the scoring for the Rockies in defeat. DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado each added base hits as well to cap off the offense for Colorado in the loss. Jon Gray took the loss, falling to 4-5 this season after allowing six runs on ten hits while striking out ten over 5.1 innings of work. Tyler Anderson will start game one and is 2-1 with a 4.23 ERA and 40 strikeouts this season. In his career, Anderson is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA and 27 strikeouts against San Diego.

The San Diego Padres will be looking to build some steam after salvaging a series split with St. Louis, taking down the Cardinals in the series finale by a final score of 5-3. Jose Pirela and Freddy Galvis each had a double and an RBI, with Galvis going 2 for 2 at the dish. Franchy Cordero, Cory Spangenberg and Carlos Asuaje each added RBIs as well to finish off the scoring for the Padres in the win, while Travis Jankowski, Eric Hosmer and Manuel Margot each chipped in base hits as well. Clayton Richard picked up his first win of the year, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out ten over eight innings of work to climb to 1-5 on the year. Brad Hand gave up a run as well but struck out a pair in the 9th for his 10th save of the season. Joey Lucchesi will start game one and is 3-2 with a 2.98 ERA and 46 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lucchesi is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Colorado.
Colorado is 5-0 in their last 5 road games and 4-1 in Anderson’s last 5 starts while the under is 13-3 in their last 16 games overall. San Diego is 7-17 in their last 24 games against a team with a winning record and 0-5 in their last 5 series openers while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Colorado is 15-7 in the last 22 meetings between these two teams and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in San Diego.
You could probably argue that Colorado is due for a win to turn things around and have the better lineup top to bottom, making the even money worth a look. However, the Padres looked pretty good in closing out their series against St. Louis, and Lucchesi hasn’t allowed an earned run in his two starts covering 11 innings against the Rockies so far this season. I think Lucchesi and the Padres are the way to go in the series opener on Monday.
