The New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals square off in game one of a mini two game set from Nationals Park in MLB action on Tuesday.
The Yankees will look to build some steam after winning their series with the Athletics, defeating Oakland in the rubber match by a final score of 6-2 on Sunday. Giancarlo Stanton led the Yanks by going a perfect 4 for 4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Aaron Hicks went 1 for 4 with two RBIs, while Aaron Judge went 2 for 4 with a double of his own to round out the scoring for New York in the win. Brett Gardner and Miguel Andujar each had two hits, while Ronald Torreyes added a double to cap off the offense for New York in the win. Luis Severino got the win, improving to 6-1 this season after allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven over six innings of work. Masahiro Tanaka will start the series opener and is 4-2 with a 4.66 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. In his career, Tanaka is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 6 strikeouts against Washington.

The Washington Nationals will look to stay hot themselves after winning seven of their last eight games, including completing the four game sweep of the Diamondbacks, including a 6-4 victory in Sunday’s finale on Sunday night baseball. Mark Reynolds went 3 for 4 with a pair of homers and three RBIs, while Trea Turner and Bryce Harper each added solo home runs and Howie Kendrick added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the Nats in the win. Matt Adams and Pedro Severino each added a double as well to finish off Washington’s offense in the victory. Jeremy Hellickson gave up one run on three hits while striking out five over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Brandon Kintzler received his 2nd blown save of the year, while Ryan Madson got the win to improve to 1-2 this season. Sean Doolittle closed out the 9th for his 9th save of the season. Gio Gonzalez will start the opener and is 4-2 with a 2.22 ERA and 50 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzalez is 1-5 with a 6.65 ERA and 39 strikeouts against the Yankees.
New York is 1-4 in Tanaka’s last 5 starts against the NL East and 7-1 in their last 8 road games while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 games against a left-handed starter. Washington is 19-7 in Gonzalez’s last 26 home starts against a team with a winning record and 17-5 in their last 22 games against a right-handed starter while the under is 10-1 in their last 11 interleague games.
Gonzalez has had struggles in his career against the Yankees, but right now, he’s a more reliable arm than Tanaka who has allowed seven earned runs in his last two starts. Gonzalez has allowed just two runs in his last three starts spanning 18 innings of work. New York had problems getting a split with an up and down Oakland team, while the Nats picked apart an NL West leading Arizona bunch, and while this could pop off and blow up in my face, I think the best option here is to go with the value and the Nationals at even money
