The Detroit Tigers and the Seattle Mariners duke it out in the opener of their four game MLB series from Safeco Field in MLB action on Thursday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound after having their three game winning streak snapped, failing to complete the sweep of the Indians with a 6-0 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Grayson Greiner put up a double, while Niko Goodrum, Mikie Mahtook, Jose Iglesias and Dixon Machado each had base hits as well in the losing effort. Ryan Carpenter took the loss, falling to 0-1 this season after giving up all six runs, five earned, on seven hits over five innings of work. Matt Boyd will start the opener and is 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. In his career, Boyd is is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 7 strikeouts against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners will look to bounce back after having to settle for a two-game split with the Rangers, dropping Wednesday’s finale by a final score of 5-1. Kyle Seager’s solo homer was the lone run that the M’s would put on the board in the loss. Ben Gamel went 2 for 4 with a double, while Dee Gordon, Mitch Haniger and Mike Zunino each had base hits as well in the losing effort. Christian Bergman threw seven shutout innings, striking out five while allowing only two hits, not factoring in the decision. James Pazos took the loss, falling to 1-1 this season. Marco Gonzales will start the series opener and is 3-3 with a 5.31 ERA and 41 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzales is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA and 3 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 0-7 in Boyd’s last 7 road starts and 7-20 in their last 27 games against the AL West while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Seattle is 7-3 in their last 10 games against the AL Central and 1-4 in Gonzales’ last 5 series opening starts while the over is 9-2 in Gonzales’ last 11 starts overall. The over is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I had thought about the plus money with the Tigers for a second, then remembered that Detroit can’t win on the road with Boyd on the mound. However, I’m also not about to lay juice with Seattle as I need to see how the team handles the news about Robinson Cano over the next week as stuff like that lingers for a couple days before it starts to subside. Instead, I’m going to side with the over as it’s been a common trend when these two teams meet. Not to mention, Boyd has allowed three or more runs in three of his last four starts, while Gonzales has allowed there or more in six of his eight starts overall this season.
