The San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates square off in game three of their four game set from PNC Park in MLB action on Saturday.
The San Diego Padres will look to build some consistency after splitting their last 16 games, but took a step in the right direction with a 3-2 win in game two on Friday. Eric Hosmer went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Franchy Cordero and Raffy Lopez each contributed RBIs as well in the win. Travis Jankowski went 2 for 4 while Freddy Galvis added a base knock of his own in the victory. Tyson Ross got the win to improve to 3-3 this season, giving up both runs on five hits over six innings of work. Brad Hand notched his 13th save of the season in the victory. Clayton Richard will start game three and is 2-5 with a 5.20 ERA and 50 strikeouts this season. In his career, Richard is 2-2 with a 2.36 ERA and 30 strikeouts against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to bounce back after allowing the Padres to tie up the series at one win apiece on Friday. Corey Dickerson and Josh Bell each had an RBI along with a double, with Dickerson going 2 for 5 at the dish. Gregory Polanco added a double of his own and Austin Meadows put up his first two major league hits while Jordy Mercer and Jose Osuna each added base hits of their own in the losing effort. Ivan Nova took the loss, falling to 2-4 after giving up all three runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Nick Kingham will start game three and is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA and 16 strikeouts this season. This will be Kingham’s first career start against San Diego.
San Diego is 1-4 in Richard’s last 5 starts and 3-9 in their last 12 games against the NL Central while the over is 3-0-1 in Richard’s last 4 road starts. Pittsburgh is 20-7 in their last 27 home games and 5-1 in their last 6 games against a left-handed starter while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL West. San Diego is 2-8 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates took a step back in game two, but if we’re being honest, Nova had struggled on the mound and he performed well, the Pirates just couldn’t get timely hitting going. Kingham has looked good in what we’ve seen from him at the major league level and while Richard has the experience edge, he just hasn’t been very reliable this season, so I’ll side with Pittsburgh to take game three on Saturday.
