The Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals duke it out in game three of their four game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Saturday.
The Philadelphia Phillies will look to bounce back after dropping game two on Friday by a final score of 12-4. Odubel Herrera led the Phils with a two-run RBI single, while Cesar Hernandez and Pedro Florimon each hit a solo homer to round out the scoring for the Phillies in defeat with Hernandez going 2 for 4 at the dish. Jorge Alfaro added a double, while Scott Kingery and starting pitcher Jake Arrieta added a base hit as well in the losing effort. Arrieta took the loss on the mound, falling to 3-2 this season after allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits over just three innings of work. Zach Eflin will start game three and is 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. This will be Eflin’s first career start against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to build some steam after their huge win on Friday. Jose Martinez led the Cards by going 4 for 5 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. Jedd Gyorko went 1 for 4 with two RBIs, while Francisco Pena, Kolten Wong, Matt Carpenter and Tommy Pham each had an RBI as well in the winning effort, with Pena and Wong hitting solo homers while Pham added a double. Tyler O’Neill added a base knock of his own in the victory as well. Michael Wacha got the win to improve to 5-1 this season after giving up two runs on five hits while striking out eight over six innings of work. John Gant will start game three is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 11 strikeouts this season. This will be Gant’s second career start against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is 7-2 in their last 9 games overall and 13-4 in their last 17 games against the NL Central while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. St. Louis is 11-4 in their last 15 home games and 26-12 in their last 38 games against the NL East while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 home games. Philadelphia is 5-16 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams and 1-6 in the last 7 meetings in St. Louis.
The Cardinals have had the majority of recent success in this matchup, including Friday’s victory. However, you could argue that the Phillies have been the better team overall this season. Sure, the Cardinals got to one of the better arms in the Phillies’ rotation, but the Phillies are sending Eflin out who has been lights out in his first two starts this season. I’m not sure what we’ll see from Gant, so taking the more comfortable option in Eflin and getting plus money sounds good to me so I’ll take Philadelphia to bounce back with a win on Saturday.
