The St. Louis Cardinals will look to rebound and salvage a series split after dropping game three on Saturday. Jedd Gyorko led the Cards with two RBIs, while Tyler O’Neill added a solo homer and Matt Carpenter hit a double with an RBI. Jose Martinez added a run on the board as well, while Dexter Fowler hit a pinch-hit double. Tommy Pham went 2 for 5 and Steven Baron chipped in a base knock as well to cap off St. Louis’ offense in the losing efforts. John Gant gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits while striking out seven over 4.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Greg Holland took his 2nd loss and 2nd blown save of the season after giving up two runs in the 8th inning. Jack Flaherty will start the finale and is 0-1 with a 2.87 ERA and 14 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s first career start against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is 5-0 in Nola’s last 5 starts and 13-3 in their last 16 games against the NL Central while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. St. Louis is 0-4 in Flaherty’s last 4 starts and 11-4 in their last 15 home games while the over is 8-2-1 in their last 11 games against the NL East. Philadelphia is 5-16 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams.
I’m of the belief that any time you can get a staff ace for a cheap price, regardless of how well the team is playing, it’s definitely worth a look. Well Nola is getting a very good price, and has given up two runs or less in eight of his nine starts this season and has superb career numbers against St. Louis. Flaherty has been good this season as well, but believe it or not, he still has yet to record a major league win, sitting at 0-3 so far in his career. All in all, I think Flaherty will hold his own but Nola will pitch another gem and lead the Phillies to another win.
