The San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals duke it out in the opener of their three game set from Nationals Park in MLB action on Monday.

The San Diego Padres will look to build some steam after winning five of their last seven games, including an 8-5 win in their series finale against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Christian Villanueva and A.J. Ellis each had two RBIs, with Villanueva going 2 for 5 with a homer and Ellis going 2 for 4 with a double. Freddy Galvis went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Manuel Margot and starting pitcher Jordan Lyles each added RBIs as well in the win. Eric Hosmer and Jose Pirela also added base hits as well in the victory. Jordan Lyles gave up four runs on seven hits, striking out four over 5.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Kirby Yates got the win to improve to 3-0 this season, while Brad Hand notched his 14th save of the campaign. Robbie Erlin will start game one and is 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 24 strikeouts this season. In his career, Erlin is 0-2 with a 16.39 ERA and 6 strikeouts against Washington.

The Washington Nationals will look to rebound after being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers, including a 7-2 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Trey Turner went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, accounting for both Washington runs in the loss. Mark Reynolds and Wilmer Difo each added a base hit as well to cap off the offense for the Nats as Washington mustered up just four hits as a team in the loss. Stephen Strasburg took the loss, falling to 5-4 this season after yielding three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out seven over 6.2 innings of work. Gio Gonzalez will start the opener and is 4-2 with a 2.36 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzalez is 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA and 41 strikeouts against San Diego.

San Diego is 0-4 in Erlin’s last 4 starts and 2-8 in their last 10 games against the NL East while the under is 8-3-1 in their last 12 road games against a team with a winning record. Washington is 7-3 in their last 10 home games and 13-4 in their last 17 games overall while the under is 7-1 in their last 8 games against a left-handed starter. San Diego is 2-5 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.

San Diego is arguably playing better baseball overall over the last week. However, I’m not sure how tempting the plus money has to be for you to back Erlin here. I mean the guy’s making a spot start and in his last start he gave up six runs, five earned, in three innings of work. Not to mention Erlin has been atrocious in his career against the Nationals, giving up 17 runs in just nine innings of work. No thanks. Gonzalez has been very good this season and this seems like a good spot for the Nats to stop the bleeding, even if the juice is a bit steep.
