The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays square off in game one of a three game AL East division set in MLB action from Tropicana Field on Tuesday.
The Boston Red Sox will look to keep their momentum going after their series win against Baltimore, winning four of their last five games with a 5-0 win over the O’s in Sunday’s series finale. All of Boston’s damage on the board was done with the long ball, with J.D. Martinez going 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs, while Andrew Benintendi went 3 for 5 with a two run shot of his own. Mookie Betts, Mitch Moreland and Jackie Bradley Jr. each had a double while Eduardo Nunez and Christian Vazquez each added base hits of their own in the winning effort. Eduardo Rodriguez got the win after throwing 5.2 shutout innings, giving up nine hits while striking out seven to improve to 4-1 this season. Chris Sale will start game one and is 4-1 with a 2.29 ERA and 87 strikeouts this season. In his career, Sale is 3-4 with a 5.05 ERA and 64 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to bounce back after having their six game winning streak at the hands of the Angels, failing to complete the sweep with a 5-2 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Johnny Field went 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a double, while Denard Span added an RBI as well to round out the scoring for the Rays in the loss. Matt Duffy went 3 for 4 with a double while Joey Wendle and Wilson Ramos each added a base hit of their own respectively to cap off Tampa’s offense in the losing effort. Sergio Romo went just 1.1 innings, striking out three while Matt Andriese took the loss to fall to 1-2 this season. Jake Faria will start game one and is 3-2 with a 5.20 ERA and 35 strikeouts this season. In his career, Faria is 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA and 5 strikeouts against Boston.
Boston is 8-1 in Sale’s last 9 road starts against a team with a losing record and 36-17 in their last 53 road games while the under is 6-1-1 in their last 8 division matchups. Tampa Bay is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall and 5-1 in Faria’s last 6 starts while the under is 3-0-2 in their last 5 home games. Boston is 5-2 in Sale’s last 7 starts against Tampa Bay.
The Rays and the heavy plus money are tempting considering how much success the Rays have had lately and how well they’ve played with Faria on the mound. However, the last time Faria took the bump against the Red Sox, he was tagged for eight runs in 1.2 innings of work. No thanks. Give me the Red Sox and their ace and to negate some of the heavy juice, I’ll take Boston on the run line.
