The Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers square off in game one of a four game set from Dodger Stadium in Memorial Day MLB action.
The Philadelphia Phillies will look to find some consistent play after alternating wins and losses in each of their last ten games, including a 5-3 loss to Toronto in their series finale on Sunday. Aaron Altherr and Nick Williams each logged an RBI, while Scott Kingery chipped in a double. Carlos Santana went 2 for 4 at the dish, while Maikel Franco added a base hit as well in the losing effort. Nick Pivetta took the loss, falling to 4-3 this season after giving up two runs on four hits while striking out seven over five innings of work. Vince Velasquez will start game one and is 4-5 with a 4.18 ERA and 64 strikeouts this season. In his career, Velasquez is 0-2 with an 11.45 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to keep their momentum going after winning eight of their last ten games, including a 6-1 triumph over San Diego in their last outing. Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger each had a two run home run, while Enrique Hernandez added an RBI of his own in the winning effort for L.A. Chris Taylor went 2 for 3 with a double, while Yasmani Grandal, Matt Kemp, Logan Forsythe, Yasiel Puig and starting pitcher Walker Buehler each had a base hit to cap off the Dodgers’ offense in the win. Speaking of Buehler… Buehler… he gave up one run on four hits while striking out eight over seven innings of work to improve to 3-1 this season. Brock Stewart will start game one and is 0-0 with a 3.72 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Stewart’s first career start against Philadelphia.
Philadelphia is 4-1 in Velasquez’s last 5 starts against a team with a losing record and 4-0 in their last 4 games against the NL West while the under is 10-4 in their last 14 games overall. Los Angeles is 4-0 in Stewart’s last 4 home starts and 1-8 in their last 9 homes games against a right-handed starter while the under is 3-1-1 in their last 5 games overall. Philadelphia is 1-7 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles is on fire right now and just got news that their ace, Clayton Kershaw will be able to rejoin the rotation for a start at the end of this series. However, I’m still not sold on Stewart, and I think if there was a game that the Phillies would steal, it’s this one. Velasquez hasn’t been great, but he is a good enough pitcher and the Phillies have a decent enough offense to steal one, so I’ll take a stab at the plus money with the Phillies on Monday.
