The Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks meet in the finale of their three game MLB set from Chase Field on Wednesday.
The Cincinnati Reds will be looking to avoid the sweep after dropping game two by a final score of 5-2 on Tuesday. Eugenio Suarez had a solo home run, while Scooter Gennett opened the scoring with an RBI single to wrap up Cincy’s scoring in the loss. Alex Blandino had a double, while Joey Votto and Billy Hamilton each had two hits to round out the offensive output for the Reds in the loss. Luis Castillo took the loss, falling to 4-5 this season after giving up all five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings of work. Sal Romano will start game three and is 2-6 with a 5.89 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season. In his career, Romano is 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA and 3 strikeouts against Arizona.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking to finish off the sweep after taking the first two games of the series, including their game two victory. Daniel Descalso opened the scoring for Arizona with a two run home run, while Ketel Marte had an RBI double and Jake Lamb added an RBI of his own in the winning effort. Jarrod Dyson added a base knock as well as Arizona mustered up just four hits as a team in the win. Zack Godley got the win, giving up both runs on six hits while striking out seven over six innings of work to climb to 5-4 this season. Brad Boxberger closed things out in the 9th for his 13th save of the season. Patrick Corbin will start game three and is 5-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 88 strikeouts this season. In his career, Corbin is 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA and 48 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 0-4 in Romano’s last 4 road starts and 15-38 in their last 53 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall. Arizona is 6-18 in their last 24 games overall and 1-4 in Corbin’s last 5 starts while the under is 16-5-2 in their last 23 home games. Arizona is 5-1 in Corbin’s last 6 starts against Cincinnati.
I’m not ready to say that Arizona has fully turned things around yet, but they’re a better option than picking the Reds. Cincinnati burned me on Tuesday with what was supposed to be their best pitcher, and now they throw out Romano, who looked like he had turned the corner, giving up two runs or less in five straight starts. Now, Romano has allowed 18 runs in his last three starts covering 12.2 innings of work. No thank you. Arizona has been in a groove offensively in the first two games of the set, so I’ll back the D-Backs on the run line for the sweep on Wednesday.
