The Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros square off in a battle of division leaders in game one of their four game weekend set in MLB action on Thursday.

The Boston Red Sox will look to stay hot after completing the three game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, including a 6-4 win in the series finale on Wednesday, giving Boston their 11th win in their last 14 games. J.D. Martinez and Eduardo Nunez each had a home run and two RBIs with Nunez going 2 for 4 with a double as well. Brock Holt and Jackie Bradley Jr. each had an RBI to round out the scoring for the BoSox in the win, with Bradley Jr. adding a double. Andrew Benintendi and Blake Swihart each had two hits, while Xander Bogaerts added a base hit as well to cap off the offense for Boston in the victory. Eduardo Rodriguez got the win, improving to 6-1 this season after giving up two runs on three hits while striking out six over 6.2 innings of work. Craig Kimbrel closed out the 9th for his 18th save of the year. Drew Pomeranz will start the opener and is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA and 31 strikeouts this season. In his career, Pomeranz is 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA and 33 strikeouts against Houston.

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

The Houston Astros will look to bounce back after losing four of their last five games, including back-to-back losses to the Yankees to drop the series, including a 5-3 loss in the finale on Wednesday. Max Stassi accounted for all three Houston runs, going 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Jose Altuve had two hits while Alex Bregman, Yuli Gurriel and Evan Gattis each had a base hit as well to round out the offense for the ‘Stros in the loss. Dallas Keuchel took yet another loss, falling to 3-7 this season after giving up four runs on seven hits while walking three and whiffing seven over five innings of work. Lance McCullers Jr. will start game one and is 6-3 with a 3.98 ERA  and 68 strikeouts this season. In his career, McCullers Jr. is 0-1 with a 6.16 ERA and 15 strikeouts against Boston.

Boston is 20-7 in Pomeranz’s last 27 starts against a team with a winning record and 39-16 in their last 55 games overall while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a right-handed starter. Houston is 0-6 in McCullers Jr.’s last 6 starts against the AL East and 1-4 in their last 5 games overall while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 Thursday games. Boston is 1-4 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.

There’s no doubt that Pomeranz has slowly gotten worse as the season has progressed, but let’s not act like Boston doesn’t have the offense to make up for it and Pomeranz did go 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA against Houston last season. McCullers Jr. has been solid for most of the year, but did get rocked for seven runs in his last start and Houston has been struggling lately. It’s not often you’re going to get this price with a team that’s won 11 of 14, so strictly based on value, I will side with Boston and the plus money on Thursday.
