The Oakland A’s and the Kansas City Royals square off in game one of a three game weekend MLB set from Kauffman Stadium on Friday.
The Oakland A’s will look to build some steam after avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, taking the series finale by a final score of 7-3 on Thursday. Matt Joyce and Stephen Piscotty each had two RBIs, with Joyce hitting a homer while Piscotty added a double. Matt Olson and Matt Chapman each hit a solo homer while Mark Canha added an RBI to round out the scoring for Oakland in the win. Khris Davis added a double of his own while Chad Pinder chipped in a base knock as well to round out Oakland’s offense in the win. Daniel Mengden got the win to improve his record to 6-4 this season after giving up all three runs on six hits while striking out five over eight solid innings of work. Blake Treinen retired the final batter in the 9th for his 13th save of the year. Frankie Montas will start game one and is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 7 strikeouts this season. This will be Montas’ first career game against Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals will look to build some momentum as well after taking their series with Minnesota, winning the rubber match by a final score of 11-8 on Wednesday. Mike Moustakas led KC, going 2 for 5 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Jorge Soler and Ryan Goins each had two RBIs, with Soler adding a homer and a double while Goins went 2 for 4 with a triple. Hunter Dozier added a solo home run, while Alex Gordon and Jon Jay each had an RBI as well to finish off the scoring for the Royals in the winning effort. Alcides Escobar and Abraham Almonte each had a base hit as well to cap off the Royals’ offense in the win, with each Kansas City batter having at least one hit in the win. Brad Keller gave up one run in three innings of work, while Kevin McCarthy got the win to improve to 4-2 and Kelvin Herrera notched his 12th save of the campaign. Ian Kennedy will start the opener and is 1-5 with a 5.15 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. In his career, Kennedy is 1-2 with a 5.09 ERA and 14 strikeouts against Oakland.
Oakland is 4-0 in their last 4 road games and 20-7 in their last 27 games against the AL Central while the over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 Friday games. Kansas City is 0-4 in Kennedy’s last 4 starts and 9-20 in their last 29 home games while the under is 5-2-1 in their last 8 games against the AL West. Oakland is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams and 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Kansas City.
The Royals may have some confidence coming into this one as they’re rested and fresh off of their series win against Minnesota. However, I haven’t forgotten about Kennedy’s struggles this season. Sure, he gave up just two runs over five innings in his last start, but the Royals have still lost each of his last four starts. Montas had a solid debut, and Oakland’s offense is easier to trust and they’ve been good on the road this season, so I’ll lay the juice with Oakland to draw first blood on Friday.
