The Tampa Bay Rays and the Seattle Mariners square off in game one of their three game MLB weekend set from Safeco Field on Friday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of Oakland, losing the finale by a final score of 7-3 on Thursday. Wilson Ramos led the Rays with two RBIs, while Christian Arroyo added an RBI as well, with all three runs coming in consolation form in the top of the 9th inning. Joey Wendle went 3 for 4 while C.J. Cron and Brad Miller each had a base hit as well in the losing effort. Ryne Stanek took the loss after giving up two runs on one hit over just 1.1 innings of work. Sergio Romo will be the opener for Tampa Bay on Friday and is 1-1 with a 6.33 ERA and 28 strikeouts this season. This will be Romo’s first career start against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners will look to build some momentum after salvaging a series split with Texas in their series finale, winning the final game by a final score of 6-1 on Thursday. Nelson Cruz led the way with three RBIs, going 2 for 3 with a home run, while Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Ryon Healy each adding an RBI, with Segura going 2 for 2 with a double. Dee Gordon added a triple while Guillermo Heredia and Denard Span each had two hits in the win. Mike Zunino chipped in a base hit as well to cap off the offense for the M’s in the victory. Wade LeBlanc got that elusive first win of the season, giving up just the one run on four hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Mike Leake will start game one and is 5-3 with a 4.93 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season. In his career, Leake is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 6 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay is 9-2 in their last 11 road games and 9-4 in their last 13 series opening matchups while the under is 4-1-1 in their last 6 games against the AL West. Seattle is 4-0 in Leake’s last 4 starts and 7-2 in their last 9 home games while the under is 8-2 in their last 10 games overall. Tampa Bay is 1-6 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams and 0-6 in the last 6 meetings between the two teams in Seattle.
Just when I thought backing Tampa Bay was foolproof with this new opener strategy they’ve been imploring, I get burned. I’m starting to think there are slowly becoming signs of teams figuring this system out, and it couldn’t come at a worse possible time for the Rays. Seattle, despite their split with a below average Texas team, has been playing some of the best baseball in the majors over the last couple of weeks. Romo has allowed five runs in his last three appearances covering just two innings, so if the M’s can get the bats going early, I like them to cruise to a game one victory on Friday.
