Up at Comerica Park on Monday, the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers will be kicking off their doubleheader with an afternoon MLB matchup in game one.

The Yankees are coming off a set versus the Orioles. New York won the first two games of that set, then on Sunday we had a rainout. That one will be made up on August 25 as part of a doubleheader.

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees Game 1 - 6/4/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

For the Monday game one, the Yankees will be going with RHP Luis Severino. In his 78.0 innings and 8-1 record this year, Severino has a 2.31 ERA with 92 Ks and 21 BBs.

Leading the way at the plate for the Yankees so far this year is Aaron Judge, with 59 hits, 42 RBI, 16 homers and 41 RBI. Miguel Andujar isn’t far behind with his 53 hits, 27 runs and 21 RBI.

Over on the Tigers’ side, they just finished up against the Blue Jays this weekend. Detroit took the first pair of games, and on Sunday they missed out on the sweep with an 8-4 loss.

For game one on Monday, the Tigers will be going with Drew VerHagen. In his 10.0 innings and 0-1 record so far, VerHagen has a 6.30 ERA with 11 Ks.

Tops in hitting for the Tigers is Nick Castellanos, way out front on 76 hits, 30 runs and 32 RBI coming into the week. In the Sunday game, Castellanos went 0-for-4.

The Yankees are 22-7 in their last 29 versus the AL Central, and 20-7 in their last 27 Monday games. New York is also 10-4 in their last 14 in game one of a series and 13-6 in their last 19 opening games of a doubleheader.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-1 in their last seven in game one of a series and 4-11 in their last 15 Monday games. Detroit is also 8-25 in their last 33 opening games of a doubleheader and the under is 3-1-1 in the Tigers’ last five in game one of a series.

Severino has been very good over the past couple of months. Since giving up five earned back on April 10, he’s allowed more than two earned runs just twice in nine starts—and both those times he gave up just three earned. Severino has also gone at least 6.0 innings in each of his last nine. With their ace on the mound, I can’t find too many reasons to pick against New York here.
