The Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres duke it out in the rubber match of their three game set from Petco Park in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to win the set after evening up the series at one win apiece in convincing fashion taking game two in a 14-1 rout. Dansby Swanson and Nick Markakis each had three RBIs with a home run, while Freddie Freeman went 4 for 4 with a home run, a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Kurt Suzuki and Charlie Culberson each had a double and two RBIs, while Johan Camargo and Ryan Flaherty each added an RBI as well to round out Atlanta’s scoring in the win. Ozzie Albies added a double and Peter Bourjos added a base hit as well to cap off the Braves’ offense in the victory. Sean Newcomb got the win to improve to 7-1 this season after tossing six shutout innings, giving up just three hits while striking out four. Luke Jackson recorded his first save of the season by closing out the final three innings, striking out five. Mike Foltynewicz will start game three and is 5-3 with a 2.22 ERA and 80 strikeouts this season. In his career, Foltynewicz is 1-0 with a 6.17 ERA and 5 strikeouts against San Diego.
The San Diego Padres will look to bounce back and win the series after a dismantling at the hands of the Braves in game two. Franmil Reyes’ solo homer was the lone run and extra base hit for the Padres in the loss, while Jose Pirela, Freddy Galvis and A.J. Ellis each had a base knock as well as the Padres cranked out just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Jordan Lyles took the loss, falling to 2-2 this season after giving up eight runs on 11 hits over 4.1 innings of work. Matt Strahm will start the finale and is 1-2 with a 2.92 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Strahm’s first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 5-14 in Foltynewicz’s last 19 starts and 1-4 in their last 5 games against the NL West while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 Wednesday games. San Diego is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall and 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL East while the over is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall. Atlanta is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings between these two teams.
Atlanta burned me on Monday and then bounced back on Tuesday, playing like the team they’ve been playing like all season. Now, Foltynewicz takes the mound and he’s given up no more than one run in each of his last five starts. That’s two runs in his last five starts spanning 32 innings. Yes please. The Padres continue to be inconsistent at the plate, and going up against Folty sure isn’t going to help things so I’ll take the Braves to win the series on Wednesday.
