The Tampa Bay Rays and the Washington Nationals meet in the finale of their mini two game set from Nationals Park in MLB action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tampa Bay Rays will look to salvage a series split after dropping the series opener on Tuesday by a final score of 4-2. Brad Miller’s two run double accounted for all of Tampa’s scoring in the loss, while Johnny Field added a double of his own. Joey Wendle, Matt Duffy and Carlos Gomez each had a base knock as well to cap off the Rays’ offense in the losing effort. Nathan Eovaldi ended up with the loss, falling to 1-1 this season after giving up all four runs on four hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Jonny Venters will get the start in game two and is 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA and 6 strikeouts this season. This will be Venters’ first career start against Washington.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Nationals will look to keep the momentum rolling and pull of the sweep after taking the opener on Tuesday. Wilmer Difo led the Nats with two RBIs, going 1 for 3 with a triple, while Matt Adams added a solo homer of his own in the winning effort. Juan Soto and Michael A. Taylor each had a base hit as well to round out Washington’s offense in the win, as the Nationals mustered up just four hits as a team in the win. Max Scherzer got the win to improve to 10-1 this season, giving up both runs on five hits while striking out 13 over eight innings of work. Sean Doolittle closed out the 9th for his 15th save of the season. Tanner Roark will start game two and is 2-6 with a 3.61 ERA and 61 strikeouts this season. In his career, Roark is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 4 strikeouts against Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay is 0-5 in their last 5 interleague games and 0-4 in their last 4 games overall while the under is 7-1-1 in their last 9 road games. Washington is 3-7 in Roark’s last 10 starts and 22-9 in their last 31 games overall while the under is 13-3 in their last 16 interleague games. Tampa Bay is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings between these two teams.

Roark has probably been the least dependable arm in Washington’s rotation, however it’s not for a lack of trying as the dude simply gets no run support. Try 18 runs of support in his last eight starts. You’re not going to win many games like that. However, the Nationals have caught fire lately, with the exception of that series against Atlanta, and given that the Rays are struggling big time right now, I feel like Washington has to be the play here.
