Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

For Thursday’s game, the Tigers will be bringing out lefty Matthew Boyd. In his 64.0 innings and 3-4 record this year, Boyd has a 3.23 ERA with 48 Ks and 22 BBs.

Nick Castellanos is the top Tigers hitter this season with 80 hits, 31 runs and 33 RBI entering game two. On Wednesday, Castellanos had one hit and three Ks.

Over on the Sox’ side, they’re going with Jalen Beeks on Thursday. This will be Beeks’ MLB debut, as he’s filling in for the injured Drew Pomeranz right now.

Boston’s JD Martinez is the team’s top hitter this year, and he entered Wednesday with 71 hits, 40 runs, 20 homers and 52 RBI. In game two, Martinez had one hit.

The Tigers are 4-1 in Boyd’s last five starts and 4-1 in his last five starts versus the AL East. Detroit is also 1-8 in Boyd’s last nine road starts and 0-4 in his last four starts in game three of a series.

Meanwhile, the Sox are 43-20 in their last 63 in game three of a series and 3-7 in their last 10 versus a left-handed starter. The over is 5-0-1 in Boston’s last six in game three of a series and 5-1 in their last six games versus a left-handed starter.

Boyd had a pretty good run of games going there for a while—four where he allowed three earned or fewer—then he gave up four versus the Jays in 7.0 innings his last time out. Beeks should be interesting to watch; he has a 2.56 ERA with an 0.98 WHIP in Triple-A this year. I’m going to give the rookie the edge here and trust the Sox offense to carry him to a win in his debut. Give me Boston.
