The Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs meet in the finale of their three game set from Wrigley Field in MLB action on Thursday.

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping game two on Wednesday by a final score of 7-5. All of Philly’s damage on the scoreboard was done with the long ball, as Aaron Altherr went 2 for 4 with a three run home run, while Dylan Cozens added a pinch-hit two run shot to round out Philadelphia’s scoring in the loss. Odubel Herrera went 2 for 5 while Carlos Santana added a base hit as well to cap off the Phillies offense in the losing effort. Aaron Nola gave up three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Adam Morgan took his 2nd loss and 2nd blown save of the year after giving up the walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th. Nick Pivetta will start game three and is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 70 strikeouts this season. In his career, Pivetta is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 5 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will look to finish off the sweep after walking off the Phillies in game two on Wednesday. Jason Heyward led the Cubbies with four RBIs courtesy of his walk-off grand slam. Anthony Rizzo had a solo home run, while Willson Contreras added an RBI and a double and Javier Baez added an RBI of his own to round out the scoring for the Cubs in the win. Kris Bryant added a double while Albert Almora Jr. added a base hit as well to round out the Cubs offense in the win. Jose Quintana gave up two runs on three hits while striking out ten over 5.2 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Steve Cishek received his first blown save of the year, while Cory Mazzoni got the win to improve to 1-0 this year. Tyler Chatwood will start game one and is 3-4 with a 4.02 ERA and 47 strikeouts this season. In his career, Chatwood is 3-2 with a 3.27 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is 7-1 in Pivetta’s last 8 starts against a team with a winning record and 13-4 in their last 17 games against the NL Central while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall. Chicago is 5-1 in their last 6 games overall and 37-13 in their last 50 Thursday games while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 games against a team with a winning record. Philadelphia is 2-7 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.

This may not be a popular pick considering how well the Cubs have played and that they probably have all the momentum after the walk-off win on Wednesday, but I’m going to go with the Phillies here. Philadelphia seems to step up with Pivetta on the mound against above average competition, and have done pretty well against the NL Central dating back to last year. The Cubs have been hot offensively, but Chatwood is the weak link in the rotation, as he still struggles with control issues and has given up nine runs in his last 10 innings of work. I think the Phillies are a solid value play on Thursday and I’m going to roll with it.
