We have an AL West showdown in the Lone Star State as the Houston Astros take on the Texas Rangers in MLB action on Thursday.
The Houston Astros will look to build some steam after snapping a three game losing streak by salvaging a series split with Seattle, winning the series finale by a final score of 7-5 on Wednesday. Evan Gattis and Yuli Gurriel each had two RBIs, with Gattis hitting a two run home run. George Springer went 2 for 4 with a pair of double and an RBI, while Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve each had an RBI as well to round out the scoring for Houston in the win. Tony Kemp went 3 for 4 with a double, while Carlos Correa and Josh Reddick each had a base hit to cap off the offense for the ‘Stros in the winning effort. Lance McCullers Jr. went six innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out four, not factoring in the decision. Chris Devenski got the win and Hector Rondon notched his 1st save of the season. Gerrit Cole will start game one and is 6-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 116 strikeouts this season. In his career, Cole is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 34 strikeouts against Texas.

The Texas Rangers will look to build their momentum after sweeping their two game set with Oakland, taking the finale by a final score of 8-2 on Wednesday. Jurickson Profar had a career night for the Rangers, going 3 for 4 with a pair of homers and five RBIs. Ronald Guzman added a two run home run while Joey Gallo added a solo homer to cap off Texas’ scoring in the win. Nomar Mazara added a double while Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a base hit of his own in the win. Bartolo Colon got the win after giving up both runs on six hits over five innings of work. Cole Hamels will start game one and is 3-5 with a 3.62 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hamels is 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA and 116 strikeouts against Houston.
Houston is 9-3 in their last 12 division matchups and 1-4 in their last 5 road games while the under is 15-5-1 in their last 21 series opening matchups. Texas is 1-7 in Hamels’ last 8 home starts and 5-2 in their last 7 home games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Houston is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams at the Rangers.
The huge plus money at home with Texas is tempting considering how well the offense performed against Oakland. However, Texas has struggled at home with Hamels on the mound, going 1-5 at home this season. Cole on the other hand has been dynamite for the Astros this season, giving up no more than three runs in a start this season. I’ve been burned on the run line lately, but to negate the heavy juice I think Houston by at least two has to be the play here.
