The Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers square off in game one of a three game AL Central weekend set in MLB action from Comerica Park on Friday.
The Cleveland Indians will look to build some momentum after sweeping Milwaukee in their mini two game set on Wednesday, taking the finale by a final score of 3-1. Michael Brantley went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Jose Ramirez added a double and an RBI and Yonder Alonso chipped in a run as well to cap off the scoring for the Tribe in the win. Rajai Davis added two hits and Yan Gomes added a two-bagger of his own to round out Cleveland’s offense as the Indians put up just six hits as a team in the win. Carlos Carrasco got the win to improve to 7-4 this season after giving up the one run on eight hits while striking out ten over seven innings of work. Cody Allen struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief for his 11th save of the campaign. Trevor Bauer will start game one and is 4-4 with a 2.77 ERA and 97 strikeouts this season. In his career, Bauer is 6-5 with a 6.48 ERA and 69 strikeouts against Detroit.

The Detroit Tigers will look to build some steam after salvaging a win and avoiding the sweep against Boston on Thursday, taking the series finale by a final score of 7-2. Leonys Martin led the Tigers by going 2 for 4 with a home run, a triple and two RBIs. Jose Iglesias added a pair of RBIs of his own with a double, while John Hicks added two runs and Jaime Candelario added an RBI with a double as well to finish off Detroit’s scoring in the win. Nick Castellanos added a two-bagger as well, while Dixon Machado chipped in a base hit to finish off Detroit’s offense in the victory. Matt Boyd got the win to improve to 4-4 this season after giving up both runs on four hits while walking four and striking out six over 6.1 innings of work. Michael Fulmer will start game one and is 2-5 with a 4.72 ERA and 55 strikeouts this season. In his career, Fulmer is 2-3 with a 7.31 ERA and 17 strikeouts against Cleveland.
Cleveland is 2-6 in Bauer’s last 8 road starts and 8-3 in their last 11 games overall while the over is 5-1-1 in their last 7 division games. Detroit is 1-5 in Fulmer’s last 6 starts and 5-2 in their last 7 home games while the under is 5-1-1 in their last 7 division games. Cleveland is 3-7 in Bauer’s last 10 starts against Detroit.
Bauer has been the better starter of the two so far this season, but the Indians have struggled with him on the mound against Detroit lately. On the other hand, Fulmer has struggled on the whole this season, trying to find his former self from last season but to no avail. Instead, I’m going to side with the over. Both teams can still put runs on the board and Bauer and Fulmer have a combined ERA just under 14 against the opposing team, so I’m expecting some runs on the board on Friday night.
