The San Diego Padres and the Miami Marlins square off in game one of a three game set in MLB action from Marlins Park on Friday.

The San Diego Padres will look to stay hot after winning seven of their last nine games, including a 3-1 win in their series finale against Atlanta on Wednesday. Cory Spangenberg went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, while Freddy Galvis and Manuel Margot each had an RBI to round out the scoring for the Padres in the win. Jose Pirela went 2 for 4 while Hunter Renfroe and Travis Jankowski each had a base hit as well to round out the offense for San Diego in the winning effort. Matt Strahm gave up the one run over 2.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jose Castillo got the win to improve to 1-0 this season, while Brad Hand notched his 18th save of the year with four strikeouts in two innings of relief. Eric Lauer will start game one and is 2-3 with a 6.82 ERA and 32 strikeouts this season. This will be Lauer’s second career start against Miami.

Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres - 6/8/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Marlins will be looking to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of St. Louis, losing the series finale by a final score of 4-1 on Thursday. Justin Your went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Brian Anderson added a base hit as well as the two combined for all four of Miami’s hits in the losing effort. Trevor Richards took the loss, falling to 0-3 this season after giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Caleb Smith will start game one and is 4-6 with a 4.03 ERA and 74 strikeouts this season. In his career, Smith is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 4 strikeouts against San Diego.

San Diego is 7-2 in their last 9 games overall and 1-4 in Lauer’s last 5 starts while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 games overall. Miami is 0-6 in their last 6 games against the NL West and 3-9 in their last 12 games overall while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 series opening matchups. San Diego is 2-5 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Miami.

Smith got the win over the Padres when he took them on just over a week ago, however he’s fresh off of an outing where he gave up five runs in just four innings of work. Lauer was torched by the Fish earlier this year, but that was when San Diego didn’t know how to put runs on the board. The Padres have been playing some of their best baseball over the last week or so, while the same can’t be said for Miami, even with a couple of wins over St. Louis. I’ll take a shot at San Diego and the plus money here.
