The New York Yankees and the New York Mets meet in game two of their three game interleague Subway Series from Citi Field on Saturday.
The New York Yankees will look to push for the sweep on Sunday after taking Friday’s opener by a final score of 4-1. Brett Gardner led the Yanks with a homer and two RBIs, going 2 for 3 at the dish, while Giancarlo Stanton added a solo homer of his own and Aaron Judge chipped in a sac fly RBI to round out the Yankees’ scoring in the win. Gleyber Torres chipped in a pair base hit as well as the Yanks put up just five hits as a team in the win. Masahiro Tanaka gave up one run on one hit while striking out eight over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Chad Green got the win to improve to 4-0 this season, while Aroldis Chapman notched his 16th save of the year. Domingo German will start game two and is 0-4 with a 5.44 ERA and 44 strikeouts this season. This will be German’s first career start against the Mets.

The New York Mets will look to bounce back and even up the set after dropping game one on Friday. Brandon Nimmo’s solo homer accounted for the lone Mets run in the loss, while Asdrubal Cabrera, Todd Frazier and Jay Bruce each added a base knock as the Mets mustered up just four hits as a team in the losing effort. Jacob DeGrom took his first loss of the year, falling to 4-1 after giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out eight over eight innings of work. Steven Matz will start game two and is 2-4 with a 3.42 ERA and 48 strikeouts this season. In his career, Matz is 1-2 with a 7.63 ERA and 14 strikeouts against the Yankees.
The Yankees are 5-1 in their last 6 road games and 6-1 in their last 7 interleague road games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the NL East. The Mets are 0-8 in their last 8 home games and 1-7 in their last 8 games against the AL East while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. The Yankees are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
There’s no denying that the Yankees are the more consistent of the two New Yorkers as of late, the problem here is that German is the weak link in the Yankees’ rotation, giving up four or more runs in three of his last four starts. Matz has been better for the Mets lately, but he still has an ERA just under eight against the Bronx Bombers in his career, and is still kinda hard to trust. Rather than try to pick a side with the brutal pitching matchup, I’ll side with the over as I see both offenses waking up and this total hitting double digits.
