The San Diego Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in game one of their three game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Monday.
The San Diego Padres will look to keep the momentum going after winning 9 of their last 12 games following a 3-1 win in the rubber match of their series with Miami on Sunday. Eric Hosmer led San Diego with two RBIs coming on a two run home run, while Freddy Galvis chipped in the other Padre RBI in the win. Hunter Renfroe added a double, going 2 for 4 at the plate, while Travis Jankowski, Jose Pirela, Christian Villanueva and Manuel Margot all had base hits as well in the winning effort. Clayton Richard got the win to improve his record to 5-6 this season, giving up the one run on two hits while striking out five over seven innings of work. Brad Hand closed out the 9th for his 19th save of the year. Jordan Lyles will start game one and is 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA and 48 strikeouts this season. In his career, Lyles is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA and 17 strikeouts against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be looking to rebound after failing to complete the sweep of Cincinnati, dropping the finale by a final score of 6-3 on Sunday. Marcell Ozuna and Yadier Molina each had an RBI, while Matt Carpenter and Greg Garcia each had a double, with Carpenter going 2 for 5 at the dish. Jose Martinez and Harrison Bader each went 2 for 4 while Tommy Pham and starting pitcher Carlos Martinez each had a base knock as well in the loss. Speaking of Martinez, he took the loss after giving up five runs on four hits while walking seven and striking out five over 3.2 innings of work. Jack Flaherty will start the series opener and is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA and 42 strikeouts this season. This will be Flaherty’s second career start against San Diego.
San Diego is 9-3 in their last 12 games overall and 4-1 in Lyles’ last 5 starts while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 against the NL Central. St. Louis is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall and 29-14 in their last 43 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. San Diego is 5-12 in the last 17 meetings between these two teams.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game, meaning it’s probably one to stay away from. However, I’m a tad hesitant to back the Padres with Lyles on the mound, as he got lit up for eight runs in his last starts. But I’m not paying this kind of juice when the Cardinals burned me yesterday and Flaherty has given up seven runs in his last two starts covering ten innings. San Diego is playing some of their best ball of the season right now, and they so if forced to pick, I’d take a shot with the Padres and the plus money.
