The New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves duke it out in the finale of their mini two game set from SunTrust Park in MLB action on Wednesday afternoon.
The New York Mets will look to salvage a series split and are in dire need of a win after losing 14 of their last 17 games following an 8-2 loss in the series opener on Tuesday. Jay Bruce hit a two run ground-rule double that accounted for both Met runs and actually gave New York the lead before a 6-run bottom of the 6th sealed their fate. Devin Mesoraco and Dominic Smith each had a base hit as well to cap off New York’s offense as the Mets put up just three hits as a team in this one. Zack Wheeler ended up with the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings of work, falling to 2-5 this season. Jacob deGrom will start game two and is 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 106 strikeouts this season. In his career, deGrom is 5-3 with a 1.84 ERA and 98 strikeouts against Atlanta.

The Atlanta Braves will look to complete the two game sweep and add to their lead atop the NL East standings following Tuesday’s win. Ozzie Albies led the charge in the 6th inning with a grand slam, while Ender Inciarte added two RBIs, Freddie Freeman had a solo homer and Nick Markakis went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI to round out the scoring for Atlanta in the win. Dansby Swanson added a double while Tyler Flowers and Johan Camargo each chipped in a base knock as well to finish off the offense for the Braves in the win. Mike Foltynewicz threw five two hit shutout innings, striking out six, not factoring in the decision. Jesse Biddle notched his first blown save of the year, while Shane Carle got the win to improve to 4-1 this season. Michael Soroka will start game two and is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA and 15 strikeouts this season. In his career, Soroka is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 5 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 0-6 in deGrom’s lat 6 division starts and 3-14 in their last 17 games overall while the under is 8-1 in deGrom’s last 9 starts overall. Atlanta is 16-7 in their last 23 division matchups and 7-3 in their last 10 home games while the under is 11-4 in their last 15 games against a right-handed starter. New York is 2-7 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams.
deGrom has been one of the best pitchers in the game this season, with a solid record and the lowest ERA in the NL. However, those stats haven’t translated to wins as the Mets have lost eight of the last 10 games that deGrom has started, with deGrom giving up two runs or less in his last nine starts. Soroka is coming off of the DL, but he did limit the Mets to one run in his major league debut, and given the form of both teams I think Atlanta and the even money is the better bet on Wednesday.
