The Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners square off in the finale of their three game AL West division set from Safeco Field in MLB action on Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Angels will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep after dropping the first two games of the set, including a 6-3 loss in game two on Wednesday. Mike Trout accounted for all three Angel runs in the win, going 3 for 5 with two homers and the three RBIs. Justin Upton added a double and Luis Valbuena went 2 for 4 as the Halos put up just six hits as a team in the loss. Jaime Barria took the loss, falling to 5-2 this season after giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits over five innings of work. Garrett Richards will start game three and is 4-4 with a 3.26 ERA and 76 strikeouts this season. In his career, Richards is 6-4 with a 2.91 ERA and 80 strikeouts against Seattle.

The Seattle Mariners will look to keep their momentum going to complete the sweep on Wednesday. Mitch Haniger led the M’s with a pair of home runs and three RBIs of his own, while Ryon Healy added a solo homer of his own, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Jean Segura added a double and an RBI of his own to round out Seattle’s scoring in the win. Ben Gamel and Guillermo Heredia each had a double with Gamel going 3 for 4 while Heredia added a pair of hits in the win. Dee Gordon added three hits of his own to cap off Seattle’s offense in the victory. Mike Leake got the win to improve to 7-3 this season after giving up one run on four hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Edwin Diaz struck out a pair in the 9th for his 25th save of the campaign. Marco Gonzales will start game three and is 7-3 with a 3.28 ERA and 62 strikeouts this season. In his career, Gonzales is 0-0 with a 4.40 ERA and 10 strikeouts against the Angels.
Los Angeles is 1-4 in Richards’ last 5 starts and 1-6 in their last 7 games against a left-handed starter while the under is 5-0-2 in their last 7 division matchups. Seattle is 4-0 in Gonzales’ last 4 starts and 20-7 in their last 27 games overall while the under is 4-0-1 in their last 5 home games. The over is 4-1-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams.
This line confuses me a little bit. I know Richards is essentially the Angels’ ace now that Ohtani could be on the shelf until 2020 if he needs Tommy John, but it’s not like Richards has been lights out. Gonzales is pitching like an ace, winning his last four starts and allowing just three runs over his last five starts, spanning 36.1 innings. Add in the way the Mariners are playing as of late, and I think Seattle at home with the low line is the way to go here.
