The Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees square off in game one of a four game weekend AL East division set from Yankee Stadium in MLB action on Thursday.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to build some momentum after completing the three game sweep of Toronto with a 1-0 win in the series finale on Wednesday. Mallex Smith and Jake Bauers each had two hits, with Smith putting up a pair of doubles, while Matt Duffy added the lone RBI of the game in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win. Wilmer Font got the start, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings, while Matt Andriese finished off the middle 3.2 innings and Diego Castillo got the win to improve to 1-0 after closing out the 8th and 9th innings. Blake Snell will start game one and is 8-3 with a 2.30 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. In his career, Snell is 2-3 with a 4.58 ERA and 40 strikeouts against the Yankees.

The New York Yankees will be looking to rebound after splitting their interleague set with Washington, dropping the finale on Wednesday by a final score of 5-4. Greg Bird and Gleyber Torres each had a solo home run, with Bird going 2 for 4 with a double as well. Giancarlo Stanton went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Aaron Judge added an RBI with a double as well to round out the scoring for the Yankees in the win. Brett Gardner also chipped in a base knock of his own. Sonny Gary gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Chasen Shreve took the loss, falling to 2-1 this season. Jonathan Loaisiga will be making his major league debut here and was 3-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 32 strikeouts for AA Trenton this season.
Tampa Bay is 4-1 in Snell’s last 5 starts and 5-0 in their last 5 division matchups while the under is 8-2-1 in their last 11 road games. New York is 4-0 in their last 4 division matchups and 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 9-3-1 in their last 13 games against a left-handed starter. Tampa Bay is 8-25 in the last 33 meetings between these two teams in New York.
Sure, it’s easy to say that the Yankees should be the favorite here because they have the stronger batting lineup from top to bottom. However, Snell has been Tampa Bay’s best starter this season, giving up just one earned run over his last four starts covering 23.2 innings. Who knows what we’ll see form Loaisiga here, and the Rays at Yankee Stadium can be scary to back, but they’re playing solid baseball as of late and getting Snell at plus money seems like a solid value play on Thursday.
