The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox square off in the finale of their three game AL Central division set from Guaranteed Rate Field on Sunday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to complete the sweep and extend their winning streak which currently sits at four games following a 7-5 win in game two on Saturday. Nick Castellanos led the Tigers by going 3 for 5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Jose Iglesias and Niko Goodrum each added an RBI to round out the scoring for the Tigers in the win, while Victor Martinez went 3 for 4 and Grayson Greiner added a double as well. JaCoby Jones and Jeimer Candelario each contributed a base knock as well in the winning effort for Detroit. Jordan Zimmermann gave up four runs on four hits while striking out four over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Buck Farmer got the win to climb to 3-3 while Shane Greene struck out a pair in the 9th for his 19th save of the year. Blaine Hardy will start the finale and is 2-1 with a 3.55 ERA and 27 strikeouts this season. This will be Hardy’s second career start against the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox will look to salvage a win and avoid the sweep to snap their three game losing skid following their loss in game two on Saturday. Charlie Tilson led the White Sox with two RBIs, while Tim Anderson added a double and an RBI and Jose Abreu and Trayce Thompson each added an RBI despite both going hitless in the loss. Yolmer Sanchez added a triple and Kevan Smith went 2 for 4 at the dish, while Adam Engel and Matt Davidson each had a base hit as well in the losing effort. Lucas Giolito gave up five runs on six hits while striking out six over 5.1 innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Jace Fry took the loss, falling to 0-1 this season. James Shields will start game three and is 2-7 with a 4.63 ERA and 59 strikeouts this season. In his career, Shields is 9-9 with a 4.44 ERA and 127 strikeouts against Detroit.
Detroit is 5-2 in their last 7 game 3 matchups and 17-39 in their last 56 road games while the under is 8-0 in their last 8 road games. Chicago is 3-8 in Shields’ last 11 starts and 5-13 in their last 18 division matchups while the under is 7-0 in their last 7 home games. Detroit is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings between these two teams and 5-0 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Chicago.
Shields did a good job making me eat my words in his last start as he stifled the Indians to the tune of seven shutout innings and could do it again here against the Tigers. However, Detroit is playing the much better baseball between these two teams over the last week, as the rest of the team has been picking up the slack on offense after losing Miguel Cabrera. Blaine Hardy has also done very well in a starting role this season, so I’ll side with Detroit and the low line for the sweep on Sunday.
