The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet in game one of a four game set from PNC Park in MLB action on Thursday night.
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be looking to rebound after settling for a series split in their interleague set with the Angels, losing the finale on Tuesday by a final score of 5-4. Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta each had two RBIs, with Goldschmidt putting up a home run while Peralta added a double. Jon Jay went 2 for 5 while Jake Lamb added a base hit of his own in the losing effort for the D-Backs. Matt Koch took the loss after giving up all five runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings of work, falling to 5-4 this season. Zack Godley will start game one and is 7-5 with a 4.77 ERA and 78 strikeouts this season. This will be Godley’s second career start against Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will look to find some measure of consistency after alternating wins and losses in each of their last 4 games, including a 3-2 loss in game two on Wednesday after having their series finale with Milwaukee postponed on Wednesday due to weather. In the loss, Starling Marte hit a solo home run, while Jordy Mercer added a double and an RBI. Gregory Polanco, Colin Moran and Corey Dickerson each added a base hit as well in the losing effort. Jameson Taillon ended up with the loss after giving up all three runs on seven hits while striking out seven over five innings of work. Chad Kuhl will start game one and is 5-4 with a 3.76 ERA and 75 strikeouts this season. This will be Kuhl’s second career start against Arizona.
Arizona is 4-1 in their last 5 road games and 5-2 in Godley’s last 7 starts against a team with a losing record while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 games against the NL Central. Pittsburgh is 2-7 in their last 9 games against the NL West and 5-12 in their last 17 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. Arizona is 2-6 in the last 8 meetings between these two teams in Pittsburgh.
If Ivan Nova was starting this game, I’d side with Arizona as I simply don’t trust Nova on the mound. Kuhl is another story. Kuhl has given up two runs or less in four of his last five starts, while Godley has allowed four or more in five of his last ten starts, including six or more twice in his last five. I’m not a huge fan of this game as a whole, but if forced to pick, I’d side with Pittsburgh to draw first blood on Thursday.
