The Detroit Tigers and the Cleveland Indians square off in game one of a three game AL Central division set in MLB action on Friday.
The Detroit Tigers will look to rebound from back-to-back losses, resulting in a two game sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds, including 5-3 loss in the series finale on Wednesday. Jeimer Candelario and Niko Goodrum each had a solo home run while Jose Iglesias went 3 for 4 with an RBI as well to round out Detroit’s scoring in the loss. JaCoby Jones and Dixon Machado each chipped in a base hit as well to cap off the Tigers’ offense. Michael Fulmer ended up with the loss, falling to 3-6 this season after giving up three runs on five hits while striking out nine over 5.2 innings of work. Mike Fiers will start game one and is 5-3 with a 4.09 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season. In his career, Fiers is 3-1 with a 2.04 ERA and 27 strikeouts against Cleveland.

The Cleveland Indians will look to extend their current winning streak which sits at four games following a three game sweep of the White Sox, including a 12-0 win over Chicago in the series finale on Wednesday. Jason Kipnis and Jose Ramirez each had a home run and three RBIs, while Edwin Encarnacion went 2 for 5 with a double and two RBIs. Yonder Alonso went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Tyler Naquin and Rajai Davis each added a run as well. Yan Gomes went 2 for 4 with a pair of two-baggers while Erik Gonzalez added a base knock of his own to cap off Cleveland’s offense in the victory. Corey Kluber threw seven one hit shutout innings, striking out seven to get the win, improving to 11-3 this season. Shane Bieber will start game one and is 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA and 13 strikeouts this season. This will be Bieber’s first career start against Detroit.
Detroit is 5-0 in their last 5 division matchups and 5-0 in Fiers’ last 5 starts while the under is 11-4 in their last 15 games overall. Cleveland is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall and 6-1 in their last 7 series opening matchups while the over is 21-5-1 in their last 27 home games. Detroit is 14-37 in the last 51 meetings between these two teams and 6-20 in the last 26 meetings between these two teams in Cleveland.
Detroit has had little success against the Tribe and in Cleveland no less, and being swept, albeit in a two game set, against Cincinnati does little for my hopes for the Tigers are I got burned by Detroit in that series. However, as good as Cleveland may be, there’s no way I’m laying this kind of juice in this situation. Bieber isn’t a pitcher that deserves near -200 odds, while Fiers is on the other side, has held Cleveland to one run in each of his two starts against Cleveland this season, and has a solid career record against the Indians. I’ll take a stab at Detroit and the plus money here.
