The Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers meet in the opener of a four game set from Dodger Stadium in MLB action on Monday.
The Chicago Cubs will look to bounce back and snap a four game losing streak which coincides with a four game sweep at the hands of Cincinnati, including an 8-6 loss in the series finale on Sunday. Jason Hayward and Anthony Rizzo each had two RBIs, with Rizzo hitting his 12th homer of the season while Heyward clubbed his 12th double of the year. Albert Almora Jr. added a solo home run, while Javier Baez added a double and an RBI as well to round out the scoring for the Cubs in the loss. Willson Contreras, Ian Happ and Addison Russell each contributed a base hit as well in the losing effort for Chicago. Mike Montgomery gave up four runs on six hits while striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Pedro Strop received his 2nd blown save and first loss of the season, falling to 3-1 this season. Duane Underwood will start game one and will be making his major league debut in this one. Underwood posted a 3-7 record with a 4.27 ERA and 60 strikeouts this season for Iowa (AAA).

The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to keep their momentum going after completing the three game sweep of the New York Mets, including an 8-7 win in 11 innings in the series finale on Sunday. Almost all of L.A.’s damage on the board was done with the solo homer as Enrique Hernandez and Cody Bellinger each had a pair of solo home runs, while Max Muncy, Joc Pederson and Justin Turner each went yard as well, with Turner’s home run in the 11th giving the Dodgers the win. Yasiel Puig went 2 for 4 while Chase Utley and Austin Barnes each had a base hit as well in the victory. Rich Hill gave up four runs on five hits while striking out five over five innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Erik Goeddel picked up his 2nd blown save of the year, while Daniel Hudson got the win to improve to 2-2 this season. Kenta Maeda will start the opener and is 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA and 71 strikeouts this season. This will be Maeda’s second career start against the Cubs.
Chicago is 2-5 in their last 7 games overall and 0-4 in their last 4 road games while the under is 21-8 in their last 29 games against a team with a winning record. Los Angeles is 4-1 in Maeda’s last 5 starts and 10-1 in their last 11 series opening matchups while the under is 8-1 in their last 9 games overall. Chicago is 0-5 in the last 5 meetings between these two teams in Los Angeles.
On the surface, plus money with the Cubs is tempting. However, the Cubs just got swept by Cincinnati and just found different ways to lose against the Reds, including a 7th inning collapse on Sunday. Now the Cubs send a guy to the mound making his major league debut in Underwood who wasn’t very good in AAA this season. Maeda hasn’t been the best arm the Dodgers have had this season but L.A. comes into this matchup in much better form and given the very reasonable line I think the Dodgers have to be the pay to draw first blood on Monday.
