The San Diego Padres and the Texas Rangers meet in the opener of a three game interleague set from Globe Life Park in MLB action on Monday.
The San Diego Padres will be looking to start the series strong after losing seven of their last eight games following a 3-2 loss in 11 innings in their series finale against San Francisco on Sunday. Manuel Margot went 1 for 4 with a solo home run while Cory Spangenberg added an RBI of his own to account for all of San Diego’s scoring in the loss. Hunter Renfroe, Christian Villanueva and Will Myers each added a base hit as the Padres put forth just six hits as a team in the losing effort. Eric Bauer gave up one run on five hits while striking out four over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Brad Hand received his fourth blown save and fourth loss of the season after giving up the walk-off hit in the 11th, falling to 1-4 on the year. Joey Lucchesi will start game one and is 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 51 strikeouts this season. This will be Lucchesi’s first career start against Texas.

The Texas Rangers will be looking to bounce back after having their seven game winning streak snapped with a 2-0 loss in their series finale against Minnesota on Sunday. Shin-Soo Choo had a double while Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor each had a base knock as well, as Texas mustered up just three hits as a team in the loss. Bartolo Colon took the loss, falling to 4-5 this season after giving up both runs on seven hits while striking out five over seven innings of work. Cole Hamels will start game one and is 4-6 with a 3.41 ERA and 92 strikeouts this season. In his career, Hamels is 9-2 with a 2.25 ERA and 102 strikeouts against San Diego.
San Diego is 1-7 in their last 8 games overall and 5-25 in their last 30 interleague road games against a left-handed starter while the under is 5-0 in their last 5 series opening matchups. Texas is 16-3 in Hamels’ last 19 home starts against a team with a losing record and 7-1 in their last 8 games overall while the over is 15-5-2 in their last 22 home games against a left-handed starter. The under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Texas.
I think this is one of the easier picks to make on Monday’s card. Texas is clearly the team in better form after putting forth a week’s worth of consecutive wins while San Diego has lost as many games over the same span. Lucchesi was roughed up for four runs while failing to make it out of the second inning, while Hamels has allowed two runs or less in 10 of his last 14 starts. Plus, Hamels has had a ton of success against the Padres in his career, so I feel comfortable laying the juice with Texas in this spot.
