We have an NL East division showdown on tap Thursday as the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies kick off a four game set from Citizen’s Bank Park.

The Washington Nationals will look to bounce back after not only being swept in a two game set by Tampa Bay, but being completely shutout 12-0 over the two games, including a 1-0 loss in the finale on Tuesday. Bryce Harper added a double while Juan Soto and Daniel Murphy each chipped in a base hit as the Nationals put up just three hits as a team in the losing effort. Max Scherzer ended up with the loss, falling to 10-4 this season after giving up the lone run on four hits while fanning four over seven innings of work. Tanner Roark will start game one and is 3-8 with a 4.27 ERA and 79 strikeouts this season. In his career, Roark is 6-8 with a 4.34 ERA and 89 strikeouts against Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals - 6/28/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to build some steam after avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Yankees, taking the series finale by a final score of 3-0 on Wednesday. Rhys Hoskins three run home run accounted for all of Philadelphia’s scoring in the win, while Cesar Hernandez and Maikel Franco each had a double with Hernandez going 2 for 3 at the dish. Carlos Santana, Scott Kingery and Jorge Alfaro each had a base hit as well in the winning effort. Zach Eflin got the win to improve to 6-2 this season after throwing seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out six over seven innings of work. Seranthony Dominguez worked the 8th and 9th innings for his 5th save of the season. Aaron Nola will start game one and is 9-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 99 strikeouts this season. In his career, Nola is 2-4 with a 4.35 ERA and 70 strikeouts against Washington.

Washington is 1-5 in Roark’s last 6 division starts and 1-4 in their last 5 games overall while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 division matchups. Philadelphia is 10-2 in Nola’s last 12 starts and 16-5 in Nola’s last 21 home starts while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 division matchups. Philadelphia is 3-8 Nola’s last 11 starts against Washington and 1-4 in Nola’s last 5 starts at home against Washington.

Plus money may be worth a look considering Washington had a day off and Nola has had his issues in the past with the Nationals. However, Nola is by far the best arm the Phillies have had this season and is 6-0 with an ERA under two at home this season. Roark is the weak link in Washington’s rotation in my opinion and was just roughed up for six runs in his last start against these same Phillies while Nola held the Nationals to two runs over six innings of work. I expect to see more of the same on Thursday so I’ll lay the reasonable juice with Philadelphia in this spot.
