The Atlanta Braves and the St. Louis Cardinals meet in game one of a three game set from Busch Stadium in MLB action on Friday.
The Atlanta Braves will look to rebound from back-to-back losses, including a 6-5 loss in the rubber match of their series finale against Cincinnati on Wednesday. Kurt Suzuki went 2 for 4 with an RBI while Charlie Culberson, Johan Camargo and Dansby Swanson each contributed an RBI as well in the loss. Nick Markakis and Ender Inciarte each chipped in a base hit as well to cap off Atlanta’s offense in the loss. Sean Newcomb gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out six over six innings of work, not factoring in the decision. Sam Freeman took the loss, falling to 2-4 this season. Julio Teheran will start game one and is 5-5 with a 4.52 ERA and 73 strikeouts this season. In his career, Teheran is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 27 strikeouts against St. Louis.

The St. Louis Cardinals will also look to bounce back after having their four game winning streak snapped, failing to complete the sweep with a 5-1 loss to Cleveland in their series finale on Wednesday. Jose Martinez went 2 for 4, accounting for the lone Cardinals run in the loss, while Matt Carpenter added a double. Marcell Ozuna, Yadier Molina and Greg Garcia each had a base hit as well in the losing effort for the Cards. Jack Flaherty took the loss, falling to 3-3 this season after giving up four runs on six hits while striking out five over four innings of work. Miles Mikolas will start game one and is 8-2 with a 2.69 ERA and 71 strikeouts this season. This will be Mikolas’ first career start against Atlanta.
Atlanta is 7-1 in their last 8 games against a team with a winning record and 1-4 in Teheran’s last 5 starts while the over is 5-0 in their last 5 road games. St. Louis is 7-3 in Mikolas’ last 10 starts and 4-1 in their last 5 games overall while the over is 7-2-1 in their last 10 series opening games. Atlanta is 1-5 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.a
The plus money with Atlanta is tempting given how well the Braves have played this season and have fared well against above average competition. However, Teheran can be a bit of a wild card and hasn’t had much luck against the Cardinals in his career, Mikolas has been a mixed bag as well, but he’s been one of the better arms that the Cardinals have had this season and St. Louis did look good in their series against Cleveland so I think the Cardinals can pick up where they left off and draw first blood on Friday.
