For Saturday’s game, the Braves will be bringing out LHP Max Fried. Over 11.0 innings and an 0-2 record this year, Fried has a 4.09 ERA with 13 Ks.
Nick Markakis is the top Braves hitter this season, with 102 hits, 46 runs and 50 RBI heading into this set. On Friday, Markakis had an RBI and a run.
Over on the Cards’ side, they’re going with Luke Weaver on Saturday. Across 84.1 innings and a 4-6 record this year, Weaver has a 4.59 ERA with 77 Ks and 32 BBs.
Coming into the opener here, Marcell Ozuna led the Cardinals with 84 hits, 31 runs, 10 homers and 44 RBI. On Friday, Ozuna got his lone hit of the night (a single) in the ninth inning and plated a run.
The Braves are 0-4 in their last four in game two of a series and 8-1 in their last nine versus a team with a winning record. The over is 6-2 in Atlanta’s last eight Saturday games and 5-2 in their last seven in game two of a series.
Meanwhile, the Cards are 4-1 in their last five Saturday games and 8-2 in Weaver’s last 10 starts in game two of a series. St. Louis is also 4-1 in Weaver’s last five starts and 4-1 in his last five Saturday starts.
With Brandon McCarthy on the DL, Fried will be getting the start here after a long absence (his last appearance was May 28) in the majors. As for Weaver, he hasn’t been too sharp with a string of 12 earned in 15.1 innings over three starts just before his last outing, which was two earned in 5.2 innings versus Milwaukee. I’m not thrilled with either pitcher here, but I’m giving the Cardinals a minor advantage for being at home and since they perform pretty well behind Weaver lately. The play just might be the over, though.
