The New York Mets and the Miami Marlins square off in the finale of a three game set from Marlins Park in MLB action on Sunday.
The New York Mets are in dire need of a win after losing a whopping 29 of their last 37 games, including a 5-2 defeat in game two on Saturday. Both of the Mets’ runs came via the home run, as Jose Bautista and Todd Frazier each hit a solo home run. Michael Conforto, Wilmer Flores, Devin Mesoraco and Amed Rosario each chipped in a base hit in the losing effort for New York. Jacob deGrom took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out eight over six innings of work. Steven Matz will start game three and is 3-5 with a 3.69 ERA and 70 strikeouts this season. In his career, Matz is 2-2 with a 3.67 ERA and 23 strikeouts against Miami.

The Miami Marlins will be looking to complete the sweep after winning the first two games of the set, including Saturday’s victory. Brian Anderson and J.T. Realmuto each had two RBIs, with Anderson putting up a two run home run while Realmuto hit a two run double. JT Riddle added an RBI single to cap off Miami’s scoring in the win, Starlin Castro went 3 for 4, while Derek Dietrich, Lewis Brinson and Cameron Maybin each contributed base hits as well in the victory. Pablo Lopez got the win in his major league debut, giving up both runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings of work. Kyle Barraclough struck out a pair in a perfect 9th for his 8th save of the season. Dan Straily will start game three and is 3-3 with a 4.82 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. In his career, Dan Straily is 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 26 strikeouts against the Mets.
New York is 0-4 in their last 4 road games and 15-38 in their last 53 games overall while the under is 5-0 in Matz’s last 5 starts overall. Miami is 6-0 in Straily’s last 6 division starts and 11-5 in their last 16 home games against a team with a losing record while the over is 17-4-1 in Straily’s last 22 home starts. Miami is 4-0 in Straily’s last 4 starts against New York.
It continues to baffle me how the Mets can be favourites against anybody. Sure, Straily has allowed three runs or more in five of his last six starts and 14 runs in his last 16.1 innings of work, but Straily did get the winning his last start, so maybe he’s turning the corner. Also, the Marlins have thoroughly outplayed the Mets in the first two games of this set and the Mets just look like a team that’s given up, so I’ll back the Marlins for the sweep here.
