Washington Nationals vs. Boston Red Sox - 7/3/18 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Nationals are in need of a win after losing three straight, six of their last seven and eight of their last 10 following their game one loss on Monday. All of Washington’s damage was done with the long ball as Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy and Anthony Rendon each hit a solo home run. Wilmer Difo and Adam Eaton each had two hits while Juan Soto chipped in a base knock as well to cap off Washington’s offense in the loss. Max Scherzer took the loss, falling to 10-5 this season after giving up three runs on four hits while striking out nine over six innings of work. Tanner Roark will start game two and is 3-9 with a 4.10 ERA and 84 strikeouts this season. This will be Roark’s first career start against Boston.

Boston is 7-0 in Johnson’s last 7 starts and 37-14 in their last 51 games against the NL East while the under is 6-1-1 in their last 8 interleague road games. Washington is 0-4 in Roark’s last 4 starts and 1-6 in their last 7 games overall while the under is 23-6 in their last 29 interleague games. Boston is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings between these two teams in Washington.

The same reason why I backed Boston yesterday is going to be the same reason I back them here. Sure, Johnson hasn’t had many career starts and went just four innings in his lone start this season. However, the Red Sox have had lots of luck when Johnson starts period and Roark hasn’t been good at all this season, and even though he only allowed one run in his last start, that didn’t stop the Nationals from dropping the fourth straight game that Roark has started. It’s simple, we are getting slight plus money with the better team, so I’ll take it and back Boston here.
