For the Thursday opener, the Cardinals will be sending out Luke Weaver for the start. In 89.0 innings and a 4-7 record this year, Weaver has a 5.16 ERA with 82 Ks and 34 BBs.

Coming into Wednesday, Marcell Ozuna and Jose Martinez were tied for the Cardinals lead on 86 hits apiece. In the Diamondbacks finale, Martinez whiffed 0-for-4.

Over on the Giants’ side, they’re fresh off a series versus the Rockies. San Fran lost the first two games of that set 5-2 and 8-1, then on Wednesday the Giants lost a tough one 1-0.

San Francisco will be going with Johnny Cueto on Thursday. Across 32.0 innings and a 3-0 mark this season, Cueto has a 0.84 ERA with 26 Ks and six walks.

Tops in hitting for the Giants this season is Brandon Crawford, with 91 hits, 38 runs, 10 homers and 39 RBI heading into the Rockies finale. On Wednesday, Crawford came up empty in a pinch-hit role.

The Cardinals are 4-1 in Weaver’s last five road starts and 1-4 in his last five starts in game one of a series. St. Louis is also 5-2 in Weaver’s last seven road starts versus a team with a winning record and the over is 4-1 in his last five starts overall.

Meanwhile, the Giants are 4-0 in Cueto’s last four home starts and 7-1 in his last eight starts. San Fran is 4-1 in Cueto’s last five starts in game one of a series and 4-1 in his last five Thursday starts.

After a series of decent performances, Weaver got pummeled by the Braves in his last start, with eight earned on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. As for Cueto, he doesn’t have a ton of innings in the books yet, but so far he’s been stellar with five straight quality starts—we’ll see how the long layoff affects him, though. That said, I am more comfortable with Cueto here so I’m taking the Giants.
