The Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Cubs square off in game one of a three game NL Central division set from Wrigley Field in MLB action on Friday afternoon.
The Cincinnati Reds will be looking to stay hot after recording another series victory, taking the rubber match of their series with the White Sox by a final score of 7-4 on Wednesday. Jesse Winker and Jose Peraza each had two RBIs with Winker going 2 for 3 with a double while Scooter Gennett and starting pitcher Sal Romano each had an RBI as well in the win. Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez each had two hits to cap off Cincinnati’s offense in the victory. Romano got the win after giving up all four runs on six hits while striking out six over five innings of work to improve to 5-8 this season. Jared Hughes picked up his 6th save of the season by closing out the 9th. Tyler Mahle will start game one and is 6-6 with a 3.83 ERA and 93 strikeouts this season. In his career, Mahle is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts against the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs will be looking to build on their current six game winning streak with a second consecutive series sweep following a 5-2 win over Detroit on Wednesday. Willson Contreras led the Cubs with three RBIs, going 2 for 3 with a home run and a double while David Both added his first career major league home run. Ben Zobrist went 2 for 4 while Albert Almora Jr. added a double and Javier Baez chipped in a base hit as well in the victory. Jose Quintana got the win after giving up both runs on five hits while striking out four over six innings of work. Brandon Morrow closed out the 9th for his 19th save of the season. Mike Montgomery will start game one and is 3-2 with a 3.55 ERA and 45 strikeouts this season. In his career, Montgomery is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA and 29 strikeouts against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati is 6-1 in Mahle’s last 7 starts and 7-2 in their last 9 division matchups while the over is 6-1-1 in their last 8 games overall. Chicago is 0-5 in their last 5 division matchups and 5-2 in Montgomery’s last 7 starts while the over is 9-3 in their last 12 games overall. Cincinnati is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings between these two teams.
Chicago has had a solid run over the last week, but you need to beat more than the Tigers and the slumping Twins to impress me. The Reds may not have the best record, but they’ve been red hot lately and have been strong with Mahle on the mound, winning six of his last seven starts. Add in the fact that the Reds have had the upper hand as of late against the Cubbies and I think the plus money with Cincinnati is worth a serious look on Friday.
